StoryFutures Academy is the UK’s National Centre for Immersive Storytelling run by the National Film and Television School and Royal Holloway, University of London.

Funded as part of UK Research and Innovation’s Audience of the Future industrial strategy challenge fund, the Academy will develop cutting-edge creative training and research programmes to ensure the UK creative workforce is the most skilled in the world in the use of VR, AR and MR.

There are 4 major aims:

  • To offer cutting edge creative training in Immersive Story-Form.
  • To give chances to traditional screen industry talent to work on immersive productions.
  • To foster co-productions.
  • To offer development finance for our participants.

StoryFutures Academy’s Virtual Production Introductory Lab provides a safe space for people to begin understanding how Virtual Production technologies are already being deployed to tell compelling stories, and how it might affect their practice in future. These sessions are run in small groups, and are intended to provide a forum for discussion and debate about Virtual Production techniques, develop new thinking and grow a community of practice.

This Introductory Lab is aimed at creative professionals from the screen industries (for example: producers, directors, production designers, VFX Supervisors, cinematographers, and others) who are new to Virtual Production and wish to learn more about the potential of the these new tools, and the current state of this emerging industry. This lab will focus on how VP technology can be used for commercial productions.

Labs are held for small groups of between 20 and 24 participants. To apply, please complete the application form. Places will be allocated in accordance with our selection criteria (see below). These Labs are free to attend and we receive a high volume of applications, therefore there is no guarantee on receiving a place and we will not be able to provide application feedback.

Immersive binaural sound is emerging as a key element of immersive content production, but how do writers conceptualise what makes an engaging binaural audio story?

StoryFutures Academy invites writers of all backgrounds with little to no immersive binaural audio experience to join our two half-days ‘Writing For Immersive Binaural Audio Lab’.

This lab takes place over two remote half-days over Zoom. Participant numbers are limited to 8 spaces to ensure participants get time for 1-2-1 feedback and there is a gap between both half day sessions to allow for project work.
